When I was a kid we went on an early morning field trip to a rice field outside of Merced,Ca. I was very impressed with their method of scaring off ducks—a morter that shot way up where it exploded into bright pink and/or yellow clouds of smoke. Then the canister floated down with a brightly colored parachute. That was over 50 years ago. Do they still do that?
