McDonalds. The restaurant foodies love to hate. I can’t go a day without one of my friends posting something negative about them in my social media feeds. Don’t get me wrong, I am not here to sing the praises of fast food. Honestly, I don’t eat it. OK, that isn’t completely true. I do enjoy a good In-N-Out burger once in a while and when I’ve been drinking.

The only reason I don’t eat fast food is I don’t like the taste of it. As you know by now, I grew up on a Ranch, with no fast food restaurants any where near me. My Mom cooked every single meal from scratch, my whole life. She even made our dogs’ food for a long time. I never developed a taste for fast food because I never ate it. I remember going to McDonald’s once in a while as a kid, but it was generally because I wanted the Happy Meal toy or to play in the Playplace.

Today was a particularly hate on McDonald’s day in my social media life. I had one group of friends posting stuff like this  and this another group posting stuff like this  and this and my favorite, this.

No wonder people are confused and angry. I want to be confused and angry too! Instead, I’m educating myself. I’m learning more about McDonalds. I’m doing an 6th grade science experiment!

I give you McExperiment – Does McDonald’s Food Decompose?

Over the next 30 days I will evaluate this Happy Meal (burger, apple slices and fries). Let’s see if it does mold, decompose or if bugs will eat it.

I bought this fresh tonight, placed it on one of my plates, took some photos and put it in my wood room (my house is way too small to leave this in my kitchen). I’m going to take pictures and notes for the next 30 days. Let’s see what happens shall we?

OMG! I’m so glad you’re doing this. I was thinking of it and ran into the same problem of small kitchen and if I put it outside – cats, deer, possums, rats, etc. One thing I’m really curious about is all the photos I’ve seen do NOT have pickles, ketchup or mustard on the burgers/buns. I’m curious to see the effect and how this really works out.

    Thank you !!!!

  2. Funny, someone I know just posted something about the McBurger myth on Facebook today. I responded with a link to The Burger Lab: Revisiting the Myth of The 12-Year Old McDonald’s Burger That Just Won’t Rot (Testing Results!). The blogger points out (correctly) that most foods won’t rot without moisture and McBurgers are pretty dry. How’s the moisture in your wood room? Also, how cold is it?

I love your blogs. They make me laugh.

  4. It’d never last here. One of the dogs would gulp it. 😀

  5. Funny.. Lots of us are on the same thought cloud today. My post this afternoon was all about the chicken nuggets.

I’m predicting the cat or the raccoon gets it. LOL I agree with SlowMoneyFarm, our dog or one of the cats would eat it. They even like bread!

  7. I love experiments almost as much as I don’t love McDonalds! Of course, if it doesn’t rot, it isn’t food… I’ll be following to see how it all goes.
    C’est le fun!

To many bugs/critters pets around here to try that. We’ve been in California just a few times, but the bug thing, everywhere we were there were no screens on windows or doors. Is that common or just in parts?

  9. Though I’m guilty of stopping for the occasional burger at Wendy’s, we don’t make it a habit to eat fast food.

Since our beef comes from the critters in the barn (and not from a box from who-knows-where), I can’t wait to see how your experiment turns out.

  10. I just realized something about this. If you really are what you eat…… then by eating lots of McDonalds, you won’t get old, decompose or rot away! Therefore the lesson to be learned here is “Eat McDonalds, and become immortal!!!!”

I’m so getting a happy meal right now, they toy will be worth a million bucks 1000 years from now on the antique road show…

That pickle and the area under the sauce on the burger will rot. So will those apples. The high fat in the fries won’t let moisture in and maybe some of the burger will survive with it’s fat. But I’d say it’s a roll of the dice with the pickle and sauce on it.
